Tenative Podcast Scripts
Hey girls, I agree that it would be a good idea to post what we're going to say in our podcast, so that we can flow. If you do type what you're planning on saying, it doesn't have to be word for word, please post it if you have the time. Remember, the rubric scores dictation, so try not to sound like you're reading from a script if you are ;-)

1. Introduction to PBL- Baking
ReplyDeletea. Hello, I would first like to thank you for your time. I take pleasure in explaining what my colleague, students, and I have been working so hard on this year to date.
b. Our students have made great progress in many aspects of their education including the “Project-based Learning.”
c. Textbook Theme One= INTRODUCE PBL
d. For those of us who are not familiar with project based learning, allow me to explain.
e. PBL INTRO=
i. Project based learning flips the traditional classroom around. PBL is powered by modern technology. The concept requires educators to rethink learning aims, classroom management, and the interaction with students. For this reason, teachers reevaluate their success and redesign their teachings to refocus the goals, learning, and teaching on the individual student.
ii. In addition to the learning specifically designed for the PBL (benchmarks), students often take away more as well, which is simply referred to as “extra learning.”
f. As you can see, PBL is an amazing way to improve traditional education. Children are learning in an active manner which has been proven more effective because it not only teaches the students using many different learning styles, but also decreases behavior problems due to the hands-on nature.
g. One PBL our students have been working on introduces them to the kitchen. As you probably remember from your schooling, teaching children about the kitchen and cooking themes can be a fun way to incorporate mathematics, social skills, nutrition, science, history, health, reading, and even music!
h. My colleagues and I have been specifically working on teaching the students about baking; there are many lessons, videos, activities, and experiences which are incorporated into each PBL—which we’d like to explain more about.
2. Safety in the Kitchen Lesson
a. Through project based learning, students must be familiar with safely surfing the internet—which is why during our safety in the kitchen lesson, the school media specialist also covered safe surfing.
b. Textbook Theme Two: Internet Communities: By surfing the internet, students were able to explore the online community (which when using PBLs—classrooms can be thought of as “online communities”). By focusing on professional learning communities—it is ensured that students learn and collaborate.
c. To relate this to our specific PBL, we return to the discussion of the kitchen.
d. The most dangerous aspects of the kitchen, in my opinion, include germs (such as salmonella), heat, and utensils (knives).
e. Because, students needed to become safe users of the internet, heat, utensils, and safely containing germs, I combined all four aspects into the lesson regarding safety.
f. As I said, the media specialist taught the students about safely surfing the web.
g. Students were able to practice their safe surfing knowledge by researching safety precautions to make a power-point illustrating what they learned.
h. Students presented their power-points to the class to reinforce safety lessons.
3. Before We Bake Video
a. Once our project based learning was in full force, students were able to view a video created by me to cover what goes into pre-baking.
b. Aspects discussed in the informational video include reading the recipe to determine ingredients and materials needed, taking inventory of what they already had, asking other’s permission to borrow materials, making a grocery list, estimating a budget for the store, as well as collecting all materials to begin the baking process.
